Vexation — The Three Poisons
While dukkha is the underlying reality that leads to suffering in general, it is the "three poisons" (kleshas) that actually lead to the particular experiences of suffering that Chan masters call "vexation." The three poisons—desire (craving), hatred (aversion), and ignorance (delusion)—are "poisons" because they cloud the original clarity of the mind. When influenced by karma, this leads to thoughts, words, and actions that cause vexation, be it emotional affliction, anger, craving, enmity, or frustration.
