France's Lycee Pasquet of Arles came in second among the solar prototype vehicles at Shell Eco-marathon Europe 2012, with a result of 395 miles (635 kilometers) per kilowatt-hour. That's the equivalent of 13,312 mpg (5,660 km/l).
Lycee Pasquet took first prize in the solar category for five years running at the Eco-marathon from 2005 through 2010. But this year, the team was edged out by Philipp-Matthäus-Hahn-Schule, a technical school in Nürtingen, Germany.

A tiny space rock that's partially tethered to Earthby a gravitational leash is our planet's first known Trojan asteroid, astronomers say.
Trojans are objects that exist in gravitationally stable regions in front of or behind another body, so that the two share the same orbit but never collide.
Trojan asteroids have been found around Jupiter, Neptune, and Mars, and Saturn is orbited by a few groups of Trojan moons. (See"'Dead Zone' Asteroid Found Following Neptune.")
Earth's newfound Trojan is about 1,000 feet (300 meters) wide and sits about 50 million miles (80 million kilometers) in front of Earth.

Swamp gas trapped under miles of Antarctic ice, a chemical souvenir of that continent's warmer days, may someday escape to warm the planet again, an international team of researchers report in Nature this week.
The researchers suggest that microbes isolated from the rest of the world since the ice closed over them, some 35 million years ago, have kept busy digesting organic matter and making methane—a much more effective greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide.
